UNDERSTANDING THE LITURGY by John J. O'Brien, C.P.

The Greatest Christmas Toy in All the World

Not long ago there was a very old, very beautiful lady named Paz. She owned her very own toy store. Her store had many wind-up toys. She loved each one very much. Every day, before the store closed, she would wish each toy good night. Paz would then put John in charge of all toys. It was his task to wind them up and keep them in good shape during the night. Then she would turn off the lights, lock the doors, and go home.

Now this is what happened one night when John, the master of the toys, began to wind up each toy. John went first to a tall soldier toy and he wound him up. The toy got bossy, was rude to John and the other toys. The soldier toy said, I am the greatest toy in the world and he began to compete with the other toys to prove that he was the greatest toy. The John went to the elegant king toy and he wound him up. The king toy got pushy , was rude to John and the other toys The king toy said I am the greatest toy in the world and began to lord over the toys to prove that he was the greatest toy. Finally John went to the beautiful ballerina toy and he wound her up. The ballerina toy got stuck up, was rude to John and the other toys. The ballerina toy said, I am the greatest toy in the world and she began to dance around the other toys to prove that she was the greatest toy.

Poor John, the master of the wind up toys! He did not know what to do. He knew that the tall soldier toy was not he greatest toy in the world. He knew that the elegant king toy was not the greatest toy in the world. He knew the beautiful ballerina toy was not the greatest toy in the world. So John said to all three of the wind-up toys, you are not the greatest toy in the world. There is another toy in this store that is the greatest. That toy just got shipped in and is on the loading platform. The greatest toy in the world is all wrapped up and even I am not worthy to unwrap its festive ribbons and gorgeous wrapping paper.

The tall soldier toy, the elegant king toy, and the beautiful ballerina toy wondered, and all the wind-up toys in the sore wondered what toy was really the greatest toy in the world. Finally, on December 24th, when all the wind-up toys were together, John found the box with the festive ribbons and gorgeous wrapping paper. He placed it under the moonlight and slowly undid the festive ribbons and unwrapped the gorgeous wrapping paper.

When he opened the box they saw a man with carpenter's hands placed on the lady's shoulder. The lady rocked a baby back and forth and hummed Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright. All the wind-up toys looked amazed. Then the tall soldier toy knelt down and bowed his head. Then the elegant king toy knelt down and bowed his head. Then the ballerina toy knelt down and bowed her head. Then all the toys knelt down and bowed their heads because this was the greatest toy, the greatest toy in all the world, the greatest Christmas toy in all the world. Then they began to hum Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright.
