The background pattern used on these pages is an elaborated version of the old Celtic Cross, an ancient symbol existing in Ireland before the arrival of Christianity. It consisted of a cross nailed to a millstone with five metal spikes. Irish Christians adopted it as their symbol of the Eucharist. To them the five spikes represented the five wounds suffered by Christ during his crucifixion. The millstone's significance is that it grinds grain into flour which is made into bread which is transubstantiated into the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
